| The rainbow lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus (family Psittacidae), is a large lorikeet with a red bill, a blue head and a red or orange breast. It also has red or orange band on its nape. It is common throughout central Cape York Peninsula where the noisy screech that it gives in flight is very familiar. This bird is adapted to extracting nectar from flowers and it eagerly pursues the nectar of trees such as the fern-leaved grevillea, Grevillea pteridifolia. |
